What are Telescopic Booms?

Telescopic booms are the hybrid of a forklift and a small crane. They look very similar to a forklift but these machines have a boom attached to them that can extend up and out. These machines are often known as “stick” booms because of their straight appearance.

A telescopic boom lift may be used if horizontal reach is needed. They are suitable and perfect for working areas that have limited access and space. This lift offers the greatest amount of horizontal reach as compared to the other types.

What are the Different Features?

Features of telescopic booms include an active oscillating axle system, dual fuel or diesel engine options, a 360-degree continuous turntable rotation, platform rotators, terrain tracking axles, and out-and-up articulating jib option. Telescopic booms that are equipped with a four-wheel drive and active oscillating axles are made for optimal use for terrains and tractions. Dual mode oscillation enables the axles to operate in rough terrain while remaining to be in contact with the ground on all four wheels. Dual fuel options for telescopic booms are helpful especially for indoor and outdoor applications. Having a turntable that rotates full 360 degrees allows accurate and precise positioning of the machine.

The articulating jib option is helpful especially when the machine needs to maneuver around or under various obstructions.

What are the Benefits of Telescopic Booms?

These types of lifts offer a minimal amount of tail swing, enabling it to be brought to places with limited access such as tight spaces. Telescopic booms can also be used indoors when there is equipment with an LPG option. They can be used for working heights of more than 150 feet and a horizontal reach of more than 80 feet. Lift capacities vary per model and manufacturer, but they range from 500 to 1100 pounds.

Telescopic boom lifts are ideal for working with safety at great heights and when horizontal reach is needed. They are compact and easy to transfer from site to site. A telescopic boom lift has more horizontal reach than an articulated boom lift.

One disadvantage of the telescopic boom lift is its instability. There are counterweights present on the machine, but the further out a boom is raised and extended, the weight it is able to lift is less than normal. Because of this hazard, the operator should always be mindful of safety measures when working with telescopic booms.

Applications of Telescopic Boom Lifts

Telescopic booms can be used for small work areas and are ideal for working at a distance. They are used for industries that require workers to be on roofs and that need equipment to be lifted to higher positions, such as stacking items. These lifts can also be used in rough terrains.

If you need to increase your speed and rate of production, using a telescopic boom lift is the way to go. Other industries that use telescopic booms are aviation, industrial, and construction applications.
