How Hyster serial numbers work

Four parts: (1) design series code, 4 letters/digits, which maps to model(s) via a prefix table; (2) one letter for the manufacturing plant; (3) a production-sequence number at that plant (per-plant numbering starts at 1501); (4) one final letter for the year of manufacture. Year letters start at A = 1957 and skip I, O and Q, so each letter repeats every 23 years (candidates = base year + 23n). Example layout from the source: G004V01515D. [src]

Sources disagree on recent year letters (2017-2026): The Intella Parts PDF (and FridayParts, which reprints the same table) prints Q = 2017 and shifts every later letter by one year, although the same documents say Q is never used. Warehouse IQ (three pages) keeps the plain 23-letter cycle and says 'As of 2018, Hyster trucks have S'. Intella's own Yale article also says S = 1995 or 2018. year_letters above follows the internally consistent 23-letter cycle; trucks with a 2017-or-later letter should show both readings or a caution until a Hyster-Yale document settles it. Where is the Hyster serial number?

The nameplate (data tag) is usually near the dashboard. If it is missing or unreadable, newer trucks may have the serial in the electronic system, or it is stamped into the frame. FridayParts lists frame-stamp spots that vary by model: right-hand frame rail or side near the counterweight; right-hand side of the frame under the floor plate; rear of the base frame in front of the steering tire, right-hand side; top of the rear frame bulkhead inside the right rear overhead-guard leg.
