Steel coil weight calculator
Steel coil weight from OD, ID and width: weight_lb = (π × (OD/2)² − π × (ID/2)²) × width × 0.2833. Enter your numbers below; the formula and its source are shown under the result.
The formulas
weight_lb = (π × (OD/2)² − π × (ID/2)²) × width × 0.2833
Carbon steel only at 0.2833 lb/in³; other metals swap the density (see coil-density-table). Assumes tightly wound coil with no air gaps, so real weight is slightly lower. Worthington: estimates are for reference only. Worthington's input ranges: thickness 0.005-0.650 in, weight 100-80,000 lb.
Worked example: Our check with Worthington's code: OD 48, ID 20, width 36 in -> 15,251 lb.
[src]PIW = coil_weight_lb / width_in
PIW is how coil reels, cradles and straighteners are often rated alongside max weight and width; compare to equipment capacity / width.
Worked example: 15,251 lb / 36 in = 423.6 PIW.
[src]length_ft = weight_lb / (width_in × thickness_in × 0.2833 × 12)
Carbon steel density. Equivalent general form: length = weight / (width × thickness × density) (Seather).
Worked example: 15,251 lb, 36 in x 0.060 in -> 2,077 ft.
[src]Estimate only. The capacity on the machine's data plate is the legal limit; never exceed it.
