Will this coil fit? Coil equipment match

Coil-to-equipment match check (reel / cradle / C-hook / feed): fits = coil_weight <= equipment_capacity AND coil_width <= max_width AND coil_OD <= max_OD AND min_ID <= coil_ID <= max_ID. Enter your numbers below; the formula and its source are shown under the result. Part of this calculation is derived by Warehouse Machines from sourced inputs.

Updated

Carbon steel weight. Take the equipment limits from its spec sheet or nameplate. Straighteners and feeds also have thickness and material-strength limits that this check does not cover.

The formulas

Coil-to-equipment match check (reel / cradle / C-hook / feed)

fits = coil_weight <= equipment_capacity AND coil_width <= max_width AND coil_OD <= max_OD AND min_ID <= coil_ID <= max_ID

Derived by Warehouse Machines from Steel Coil Calculator (Worthington Steel): no single source states this formula, so treat the result as an estimate.

Derived by Warehouse Machines: a comparison of the coil (weight from coil:coil-weight-from-od-id) with the limits the user enters from the equipment's own spec sheet. Worthington: coil estimates are for reference only. Straightener and feed capacity also depends on thickness and material strength and is not checked here.

Worked example: Our arithmetic with example limits: a 15,251 lb coil (48 in OD, 20 in ID, 36 in wide) does not fit a reel rated 10,000 lb, 30 in wide; it fits weight and width on a 20,000 lb, 42 in reel with 60 in max OD and a 16-21 in ID range.

Steel coil weight from OD, ID and width

weight_lb = (π × (OD/2)² − π × (ID/2)²) × width × 0.2833

Carbon steel only at 0.2833 lb/in³; other metals swap the density (see coil-density-table). Assumes tightly wound coil with no air gaps, so real weight is slightly lower. Worthington: estimates are for reference only. Worthington's input ranges: thickness 0.005-0.650 in, weight 100-80,000 lb.

Worked example: Our check with Worthington's code: OD 48, ID 20, width 36 in -> 15,251 lb.

Estimate only. The capacity on the machine's data plate is the legal limit; never exceed it.
