Scissor and boom lift wind speed check
MEWP wind limit check: within rating = wind speed measured at the platform <= the wind rating on the data plate (indoor-only machines: 0 m/s; typically 12.5 m/s = 28 mph outdoor). Enter your numbers below; the formula and its source are shown under the result.
Measure at the platform with a handheld anemometer: wind at height is often stronger than at the ground. Watch for gusts.
The formulas
within rating = wind speed measured at the platform <= the wind rating on the data plate (indoor-only machines: 0 m/s; typically 12.5 m/s = 28 mph outdoor)
IPAF: the maximum wind rating is on the data plate and at the control position and is measured at the platform; wind at height may be stronger than at ground level; indoor-only MEWPs are rated 0 m/s; some machines have reduced outdoor capacity or height; IPAF recommends a handheld anemometer at the work platform.
Worked example: IPAF: scissor example indoor load 500 lb / outdoor 250 lb; indoor platform height 30 ft / outdoor 27 ft.
[src]rated_wind ∈ {0 mph (indoor), 28 mph / 12.5 m/s (outdoor)}
Genie AerialPros article on the ISO-harmonized ANSI and CSA standards: indoor (0 mph wind) or outdoor (up to 28 mph of wind).
Worked example: n/a
[src]1 mi/h = 0.44704 m/s; 1 km/h = 0.2777778 m/s; 1 lbf = 4.448222 N; 1 lb = 0.4535924 kg; 1 in = 0.0254 m; 1 t = 1,000 kg
NIST SP 811 Appendix B.9. Used by the calculators to show results in both unit systems.
Worked example: 28 mph x 0.44704 = 12.5 m/s.
[src]Estimate only. The capacity on the machine's data plate is the legal limit; never exceed it.
