Scissor lift floor load calculator

Overall floor load (OFL) pressure: OFL_psf = machine_weight_lb / (length_ft x width_ft). Enter your numbers below; the formula and its source are shown under the result.

Use the maker's published floor loads when the spec sheet or manual has them. Compare with the floor's rating from a structural engineer, with a safety factor.

The formulas

Overall floor load (OFL) pressure

OFL_psf = machine_weight_lb / (length_ft x width_ft)

Skyjack: the average load the scissor lift puts on the whole surface under the chassis; floor loads can be measured with or without a rated load in the platform.

Worked example: Our arithmetic with example inputs: 3,000 lb on a 6 ft x 2.5 ft footprint = 3,000 / 15 = 200 psf.

Wheel / locally concentrated pressure

pressure_psi = max_wheel_load_lb / contact_area_in2

Skyjack: LCP assumes no compression of the ground and uses only the tread in contact, so it gives the higher number; GBP uses the length and width of the contact area. One wheel can carry more than 25% of the machine weight.

Worked example: Skyjack figure 1, the same tire imprint: tread area for LCP 8.68 in2, for GBP 10.25 in2. Our arithmetic with an example 1,300 lb wheel load: 150 psi LCP, 127 psi GBP.

Ground/slab must exceed machine ground bearing pressure

check: load capacity of the surface > maximum ground bearing pressure of the MEWP (same units)

IPAF: load capacity must exceed the maximum ground bearing pressure of the MEWP and the total weight; IPAF recommends a professional site survey; in certain circumstances an assessment by a competent structural engineer may be necessary.

OEM floor loading figures need safety factors

rule: Genie's published floor loading figures are approximate and should be used only with adequate safety factors

Estimate only. The capacity on the machine's data plate is the legal limit; never exceed it.
